Sarah's training - the first lesson....
After Sarah's driving instructor, Malcolm, reassured her that she would be able to drive safely she was ready to start her first lesson.

"First of all" her driving instructor said.

"You must set the car up for you to drive. No two people are the same height, so you need to make sure you can reach the pedals. The process for setting the car for you to drive is called 'The cockpit drill'. Sort of like the checks a pilot carries out before flying an aeroplane."

Here is the drill:

  • Check that your door is firmly shut
  • Check that your seat is in the right position
  • Check that you can move your hands freely around the steering wheel
  • Put your seat belt on and check your head restraint is set properly
  • Adjust your rear view mirrors

A good way to remember the correct order of checks is to use the letters.

  • D - Doors
  • S - Seat
  • S - Steering
  • S - Seatbelt
  • M - Mirrors
  • D-S-S-S -M

A lot more detail was given to Sarah, the process took around 40 minutes, answering Sarah's every relevant question along the way. As her driving instructor was explaining each task, he was writing it down on a paper for her to take away at the end of the lesson.

This was the start of Sarah's
Quantum learning experience

Now it was time to start the engine, and Sarah was all excited and full of a mixture of fear and anticipation. But she remembered the web page she first read about how Malcolm trains nervous students to be confident and comfortable at all times. To be relaxed and have faith in your instructor and faith in yourself. You will then become unstoppable.
"What a powerful statement" Sarah thought

As Sarah drove steadily along her first road she became overwhelmed with the whole experience:
Sarah was now driving.

On her first driving lesson Sarah had managed to; drive away from the kerb on an uphill, downhill and flat roads. Complete a number of left turns from minor roads into other minor roads, from give way turns and non give way turns. Not once did Sarah stall the car or touch the kerb. She had followed her driving instructors advice throughout her lesson.

Sarah had many questions for her instructor along the way and all were answered to her understanding. One of the first things she noticed about talking and driving was that her instructor made her stop every so often, so that he could explain in more detail the answer to my questions.

Sarah was now learning the power of focus

When Sarah had finished her first lesson her instructor drove her back home. She could not wait to tell her family how she got on.
"Musn't forget my notes you wrote for me" Sarah said
Her driving instructor had written all important points down so that she could look over them before her next lesson.

Quantum learning in action

Sarah progressed well with her driving lessons. She took each lesson as another step closer to becoming a safe driver. Understanding the car controls was her main priority on her early lessons. Once that was accomplished she was ready to move on to dealing with other traffic and the rules of the road as written in the Highway Code and frequently referred to by her driving instructor.

Sarah was guided by her instructor every step of the way until she was eventually able to drive around independently of instruction. She had been studying her theory alonside her driving lessons and now she was ready to apply for her theory test exam. Whilst waiting for her theory appointment she decided to practice an online theory test.
